Merchant Blacklist

What This Means

The card was declined because the cardholder has specifically requested their bank to block charges from your business, or Stripe's own fraud systems flagged the transaction. This is a strong signal that the customer does not want to be charged.

This decline is not retryable.

Retrying will likely fail again. The customer needs to update their payment method or contact their bank.

Common Causes

  • 1Customer asked their bank to block charges from your merchant descriptor
  • 2Stripe Radar flagged the transaction based on fraud signals
  • 3Previous chargeback from this customer led to automatic blocking

Recovery Tactics

  1. 1Do not retry this charge under any circumstances
  2. 2Review the customer's history for previous disputes or chargebacks
  3. 3If you believe this is an error, contact the customer through a non-payment channel

FAQ

Can I get removed from the blacklist?

If the block was set by the cardholder through their bank, only the cardholder can remove it. If it was Stripe Radar, review your Radar rules and consider reaching out to Stripe support if you believe it is a false positive.

Does this affect all my charges or just this customer?

This is specific to this cardholder/card and your merchant descriptor. It does not affect charges from other customers. However, if Stripe Radar is flagging many transactions, review your overall fraud profile.
